Episode 4 : Desire vs. Capacity & An Introduction to Protective Parts

In this episode of Beneath the Binge, somatic practitioner Alex Bottomley explains the all-or-nothing cycle with food, exercise, and life as a nervous system pattern rather than a willpower issue.

She distinguishes between desire (what you want and expect of yourself) and capacity (what your nervous system can realistically hold given stress, sleep, safety, history, and support), noting that when desire exceeds capacity, pressure builds and the body seeks relief through bingeing, “screw it” moments, or collapse.

Alex maps the cycle somatically, from the “I must do it all” phase with bracing and sympathetic activation, followed by an “I give up” phase with shutdown, numbness, and shame.

She describes protective parts: a proactive controller and a reactive soother guarding a vulnerable inner part, before guiding a practice to scale expectations down to find the body’s “sweet spot,” affirming “that is enough for me.” Alex ends this episode by mentioning her six-month group program, Find Your Freedom, starting April 29th.
